As a singer and composer Susannah has always taken a keen interest in contemporary music. At the Royal College of Music she studied composition with Stephen Dodgson, Alan Ridout and Edwin Roxburgh. She worked with John Cage, Murray Schaeffer and Gilles Tremblay at the Banff Centre in Canada, performing their works. She sang Das Buch der Hängenden Gärten (by Schönberg) in Sienna. A Music Theater Recital of these songs is available which includes a dialogue between Kandinsky and Schönberg concerning music and art, as well as live painting.

In London she has sung in music theatre premieres by Xenakis (The Bacchae, Opera Factory), Andrew Poppy (Salomé’s Revenge) and Michael Christie (The Standard Bearer, Royal Opera House Garden Venture). For her own company Selfmade Music she commissioned (and sang the leading roles in) works by Priti Paintal (Camille Claudel), Avril Anderson (Beware Lest the Bird), David Bedford (Sylvia Pankhurst), Peter Wiegold (Pope Joan) and Michael Christie (Medea).

In 1997 she took the lead role in Marius Constant’s new opera Sade-Thérèse for the Berliner Kammeroper and also sang in the premiere of Amendola’s The Mountain Giants at Batignano. She has worked with Peter Rundel of Ensemble Modern on Ligeti’s Aventures in Brussels. She made her debut at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp singing three roles in Berg’s Lulu, and she sang in Philip Glass’ new Peace Symphony in Ghent and at the Ruhr Festival.
